Automatic Transmission

Column Mounted Gear Selector: The selector lever is mounted on the right side of the steering column. When you are ready to drive, move the selector lever from "P" or "N" to the desired drive position. Pull selector lever toward you when shifting into reverse, second, first, or park, or when shifting out of park.

Console Mounted Gear Selector: The Selector on the console panel located at the driver's right is illuminated for night driving. The selector lever may be shifted freely from "N" neutral to "D" drive.

To move the lever to or from "P" park position or into "2" second, "1" first, or "R" reverse, it is necessary to depress the shift lever button, located  on the top of the selector lever.

Gear ranges are as follows:

"P" park: Supplements parking brake by locking the transmission. Engine can be started in this range. Never us "P" while car is in motion.

"R" reverse: Use this range only when the car has been stopped.

"N" neutral: Use when car idles for prolonged periods with engine running. Engine can be started in this range.

"D" drive: For most city and highway driving.

"2" second: For driving slowly in heavy city traffic or on mountain roads where more precise speed control is desirable. Use it also when climbing long grades, and for "engine braking" when descending moderately sleep grades.
